Our Degradation of the Present
Now obviously, making plans is indeed present preparation for a future endeavor, but what about the things that don’t have to wait until the future of tomorrow? In my mind I can picture the present day like a small child jumping up and down with its hand waving wildly about in the air yelling, “Pick me! Pick me!”
How many times have we disregarded today and its wealth of opportunities only to court the imagined opportunities of tomorrow? Tomorrow is not promised and not just in the depressing sense that you could die tomorrow (which is how people usually insinuate that phrase), but I personally think that it also means that valuable opportunities could be missed if one waits too late and puts off for tomorrow what can be done today.
We degrade and take for granted the present moment of the day and all the while we romance the future. However, we should be valuing today and taking full advantage of all it has to offer which is really the only proper way to ensure the best for ourselves in the future.
After pondering this over in my quiet time, I made a decision that I would take full advantage of today. I would still make plans but anything that can actually be DONE today will be done TODAY! I also changed my language. Therefore, I stopped telling myself that I was GOING to live my life to the fullest but instead I began saying I AM living my life to the fullest! As a result, the things that I was HOPING for, are happening now!
I am happy and grateful for the present gift of today!
And on that note, I leave you with a poem of mine entitled, “Conscious in Time”.
Carpe’ Diem! Seize the day!
A. L. Hearn
Time moves steady
At his old familiar pace
Patiently ticking away
The moments of the human race
And
As humans race
Building up speed every second of every day
Never slowing down or stopping
Never conscious in the fray
He continuously moves
With each second
With every minute, and every hour
And every now and then
He hopes that men may stop and discover
Wasted time
Stolen moments
Missed moments
Present moments
And cherish them
And live them
Fully
And live them
Now
